The history of the Institute of the Economy of Industry (IEI) of the NAS of Ukraine began in 1959 as a department of the economy of industry of the Donetsk Economic Council. In 1965 it was conveyed to the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic as a department of the Institute of the Economy. On 8th July, 1969 the department was reorganized into the Institute of the Economy of Industry of the AS of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, since 1994 – Institute of the Economy of Industry of the NAS of Ukraine.

Topicality of research conducted in the Institute of the Economy of Industry of the NAS of Ukraine covers a wide range of high-priority problems in the natural and social sciences, taking into account the most important provisions of the supreme national legislative bodies decisions, documents and materials of the decrees of the President of Ukraine, Verkhovna Rada and the Cabinet of Ministers, as well as other governmental regulations on the transition to functioning in market economy.

Scientific and scientific-organizational activity of the Institute of the Economy of Industry of the NAS of Ukraine is performed in the following areas:

- public administration and regulation of the production sector;

- industrial policy in the context of post-industrial development strategy and trends;

- socio-economic problems of production and social policy;

- innovation and investment processes in the industry and their support;

- regional problems of industrial and social development;

- economic mechanism of entrepreneurship and corporate governance.

The Institute of the Economy of Industry of the NAS of Ukraine developed concepts of industrial, scientific, technical, regional and social policy, Ukrainian public sector management, propositions to the conceptual provisions of the draft for a report by the President of Ukraine to Verkhovna Rada "Strategy for the stabilization of economic growth," the project "Program of economic security"; the economic mechanism of planning and managing investment and innovation processes in the industry; scientific and methodological framework of improving the tax system of Ukraine; recommendations for the design and elaboration of entrepreneurship and market infrastructure development programs; formation of the economic mechanism for regulating environmental management processes in continuous development conditions etc.

Theoretical and applied research results are actively used in the work of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, sectoral and regional governing bodies in the process of drafting legislation and regulations, developing regional and governmental concepts, forecasts, programs, etc.

The Institute of the Economy of Industry of the NAS of Ukraine has a large number of applied and theoretical studies obtained during the research of problems connected with structural and investment changes in the economy, public sector of industry management problems, as well as economic and social security in the context of regional and sectoral dimensions of development.

Scientific potential of the Institute of the Economy of Industry of the NAS of Ukraine comprises 105 researchers, including 2 academicians of the NAS of Ukraine, 1 corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine, 29 doctors, 73 candidates, 14 members of the Public Academies of Sciences. The work is conducted in the following Divisions of the Institute of the Economy of Industry of the NAS of Ukraine:

Division of Macroeconomics and Regional Policy Problems;

Division of Development Strategy Problems and Financial-Economic Regulation of Industry;

Division of Enterprise and Production Complex Economy;

Division of Socio-Economic problems.
